Report finds tenants experience violence at greater levels than homeowners, urges RTC
A new report from the Alliance for Safety and Justice finds that renters are three times as likely to be subjected to violence as homeowners, and “The disparity persists across income levels, racial and ethnic groups, and age.” The report also notes that “Unlike homeowners, renters face the potential for eviction, legal challenges related to terminating the lease if they need to relocate, and a limited ability to quickly address security issues in their homes, such as changing locks”, and that nearly half of renters have less than $1,000 to address safety issues that arise. And “43% of younger adults who were evicted during the preceding year were also victims of violence.” The report endorses a number of solutions to this problem, including providing a right to counsel for tenants facing eviction.
