Birmingham AL funds tenant rep pilot

In 2025, a coalition of leaders approached the City of Birmingham about enacting a right to counsel in eviction cases. Although the ideas were well-received initially, the City ultimately decided to award Legal Services Alabama (LSA) a $150k contract for general services in the city limits. LSA plans to use the funds to focus on eviction defense in public housing cases. LSA will gather data on the services provided during this two-year contract to make a case for implementing a true right to counsel in the future.

The NCCRC has worked with local partners on obtaining the funding.
