Housing Not Handcuffs campaign kicks off, features right to counsel
On November 15, 2016, the national Housing Not Handcuffs (HNH) campaign was formally launched by hundreds of organizations seeking to end the criminalization of homelessness in the United States. Spearheaded by the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty as well as the National Coalition for the Homeless, the campaign developed a series of policy recommendations to end unjust evictions, one of which is to provide a right to counsel in eviction cases.
On December 13, 2016, HNH hosted a webinar to discuss these policy recommendations. NCCRC Coordinator John Pollock presented on the history of the right to counsel in housing cases as well as the activities underway around the country to establish such a right. Uncommon Journalism covered the webinar.
NCCRC helped develop the right to counsel policy and presented during the HNH webinar.
