South Carolina bill would provide right to counsel for tenants
A newly-introduced South Carolina bill, HB 3844, would guarantee counsel for indigent tenants facing eviction. In April, the lead sponsor, Marvin Pendarvis, penned an Opinion piece in the Post and Courier, explaining why this bill needs to pass, noting that South Carolina has some of the highest eviction rates in the country and that “A total of 28% of S.C. residents are renters, and about 24% of renting households are severely cost-burdened, spending more than half their income on rent.”
The NCCRC has provided support to the ACLU of South Carolina in their work around the bill.
