AAAS highlights right to counsel in major access to civil justice report

In their 2020 report, Civil Justice for All: A Report and Recommendations from the Making Justice Accessible Initiativethe American Academy for Arts and Sciences describes how NYC passed a tenant right to counsel in 2017 and was followed quickly by San Francisco, Newark, Cleveland, and Philadelphia, and how “Advocates for a general civil right to counsel requirement regard this groundswell of local laws providing a right to legal assistance in eviction cases as a precedent for other areas of civil law as well.  Among other recommendations, the report calls for an increase in civil legal aid lawyers via increased funding for the Legal Services Corporation.


The NCCRC's Coordinator John Pollock served on the Housing Committee that provided input on the report.
