H7697: Same as SB 2680: Known as “The Rhode Island Indian Child Welfare Act,” the bill would provide that Indian families, Indian parents and Indian custodians are entitled to legal counsel in any Indian child custody proceeding or emergency proceeding. Upon their request and the court finding that they are indigent, the court shall appoint them counsel. Also provides that the family court may, in its discretion, appoint counsel for the Indian child upon a finding that an appointment of counsel is in the best interests of the Indian child.
