TN legislature considers two RTC bills related to voting rights
In 2026, the Tennessee legislature introduced cross-filed bills, HB 1053 and SB 1119, that would have provided a right to counsel to individuals whose right to vote is at stake. The bills provided, “Prior to revoking a person’s provisional right of suffrage, the court shall provide the person with court-appointed counsel and offer the person the opportunity to be heard and to submit proof of the person’s financial inability to pay, which may include a signed affidavit of indigency.”
Unfortunately, HB 1053 died in Chamber, while SB 119 died in the Senate Judiciary Committee.
