Eviction right to counsel bill dies in Committee

02/07/2023 , Oklahoma , Legislation , Housing - Evictions

In 2024, the Oklahoma House introduced HB 2726, a bill that would have provided a right to counsel to defendant tenants in eviction actions with an annual income of 200% of less of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL).  The program would have been implemented by the Oklahoma Indigent Defense system, and rollout of the program was to be made by giving priority to counties experiencing the highest rate of evictions and by providing representation to tenants disproportionately at risk.

Unfortunately, the bill died in a House Appropriations and Budget Judiciary Subcommittee and will not carry over to 2025.
