Bills to establish working group to improve family court processes die

12/08/2025, Hawaii, Legislation, Abuse/Neglect/Dependency - Children

SB 1228 and HB 900 would have established a working group to improve family court processes including access to legal representation for youth in child protection proceedings. The group would have been tasked with considering pathways for implementation of the recommendations made by the Malama Ohana group of lived experience experts and community members, with a report to be submitted to the legislature including plans for a pilot program to study children’s legal representation for youth of a specified age.

Unfortunately, both bills died in committee.
