Maryland extends appropriations for the eviction right to counsel through 2028

05/13/2025 , Maryland , Legislation , Housing - Evictions

The Maryland legislature enacted SB 154 this session, making changes to the Access to Counsel in Evictions – Task Force and Special Fund.  Originally, the program’s primary yearly funding source was set to expire in 2027.  The bill as introduced would have lifted the sunset on the program’s funding entirely.  Though this provision was removed through amendment, the enacted bill does extend appropriations through 2028.

In addition, the law as introduced would have eliminated the Access to Counsel in Evictions Task Force, but the enacted version appears to retain the Task Force with a few modifications.
