Multnomah County ballot initiative would establish eviction RTC
12/17/2022, Legislation, Housing - Evictions
In May 2023, voters in Multnomah County will consider a ballot initiative that would provide a right to counsel for tenants facing eviction the county. The campaign is being led by Eviction Representation for All, and would pay for the right to counsel via a small increase in the county-level capital gains tax.
In April 2022, the Portland Business Alliance filed a legal challenge to the ballot initiative, but that challenge was defeated, and in December 2022 the ballot initiative was certified to have sufficient signatures to proceed to the voters in the summer of 2023.
The NCCRC has provided support to the ballot initiative proponents.
